Hello, I wanted to take this chance to announce I will be running for Secretary of The International Betta Congress (IBC) this 2011 year. I have been involved with the IBC for many many years and have been an avid supporter of it as well. As a showman, mentor ,chapter president and advocate for new betta people everywhere. I believe that a governing body of people with an active interest in both breeding and showing and teaching and expanding the knowledge of bettas is what is needed to keep the IBC strong and moving forward. 1. Where are you from?
I was born in the USA but was raised overseas, mainly in Africa and Asia. I moved to the Sudan when I was 13 months old and returned to the USA when I was 16. My father worked for the United Nations Developement Program, so my family traveled quite a bit to many different countries such as the Sudan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Thailand, St. Vincent, Ghana, Liberia and Kenya. If I could go back to any of the countries I lived in as a child it would be Thailand...knowing now about Bettas the way I do, I would love to work on a Thai Betta Farm for a month and learn the secrets of the Thai Breeders!

2.At what age did you start raising and breeding fish?
I first discovered Bettas when I was a very young boy living in Thailand. My mother used to shop at the out door markets and there you would see beautiful birds, lizards and snakes and many fish. Though I did not have any of them-I loved to sit and look at them. Many years later, I raised Guppies and all Live Bearing Fish....but soon my interest turned to the beauty and elegance of Betta Splendens.

Descubrí por primera vez Bettas cuando yo era un muchacho muy joven que vive en Tailandia. Mi madre solía comprar en los mercados y hay se ven que hermosas aves, lagartos y serpientes y peces. Aunque yo no tenía ninguno de ellos-me encantaba sentarme a verlas. Muchos años después, consegui Guppies y todos los peces viviparos .... pero pronto mi interés se volvió hacia la belleza y la elegancia de Betta splendens.
3. With what fish did you start?
As I said before, I started in Aquarium fish with Guppies-but when Bettas came into my life-I had no time for anything else. My first spawn of Bettas was a pet store pair of VeilTails. Once I saw the babies hatch from their eggs and start to swim around the tank...I knew it would be the fish I would stay with and breed always.

4. How do you prepare your fish to breed?
Every Betta breeder has his/her own way of breeding. There is no "Right" way or "Wrong" way, only your own way learned from experience. My way of preparing my pairs to spawn is quite simple. First, I choose the pair based on size and coloration. I belong to the International Betta Congress and as such I watch to make sure that the standards for raising show fish are met. Once the pair is selected, I move them into square plastic containers-such as Beanie Baby Boxes-so the pair can see each other. For the next few days I let them look at each other and get attracted. I feed them 4-5 times a day (small amounts) to make sure they are well fed and well conditioned. Feeding them alot during this time-called Priming- helps to make sure they will not eat the eggs or the young during that time. After a few days, I put the spawn tank together. I use a 5 gallon tank with a lighted hood. On one side, I place a large grouping of plants. This will be the hiding place for the female if the male becomes to rough with her during spawning. On the other side of the tank, I float a piece of styrofoam in the corner. That is where the male will build his bubble nest. I then fill the tank only 5 inches full of water. The water level is important because it must be high enough for the pair to swim under the nest, but low enough so that when the newly hatched fry start swiming, they can reach the surface of the water without too much struggle. Once the tank is filled with water, I release the female into the tank. I let her swim around a few minutes, then release the male into the tank. At first the pair will do nothing...then they will notice each other and that is when the beauty begins. The male will flare his fins full and show off for the female..the female will show vertical bars on her belly which is natures way of telling the male she is ready to spawn. The rest is nature at it's best. If, for some reason, you do all of these things I have mentioned and your spawn does not work out-do not give up. Nature is a crazy thing. Sometimes the pair will not spawn, sometimes they do not like each other, and sometimes-without warning-the male (or female) will kill the other because they are too aggressive. Remember, these fish are called "Siamese Fighting Fish" that is why they live their lives alone and can only come together during spawning.

Para los próximos días se van buscar el uno al otro y atraer. Yo los alimento 4-5 veces al día (pequeñas cantidades) para asegurarme de que están bien alimentados y bien acondicionado. Una vez que el tanque se llena con agua, libero a la hembra en el tanque. Dejé que nade unos minutos, luego suelto el macho en el tanque. En un primer momento la pareja no hará nada ... entonces se dará cuenta de sí y es cuando comienza la belleza. El macho muestra sus aletas por completo y se las muestra a la hembra .. la hembra muestra unas barras verticales en su vientre, que es manera de la naturaleza decirle al macho que ella está lista para desovar. El resto lo hace la naturaleza. Si, por alguna razón, usted hace todas estas cosas que he mencionado y su intento no funciona no se dé por vencido. La naturaleza es una locura. A veces la pareja no se generan, a veces no se llevan bien, y a veces-sin aviso-el macho (o la hembra) mata a los otros porque son demasiado agresivos. Recuerde, estos peces son llamados "peces luchadores siameses" es por eso que viven solos y sólo pueden reunirse durante el desove.
5.Do you have a farm, fish room etc? If so do you have employees? and if so how big is the area or may you show pictures?
I do not have a farm (I wish I did!) but I do have a fish room. It is my guest room upstairs as it is the warmest room in my house. I have 9 - 10 gallon tanks, 4 - 2 gallon and 2 - 5 gallon breeding tanks. I have 2 - 30 gallon grow out tanks for the young bettas when they start to swim freely. I am a different breeder as I do not use heaters in my tanks or filtration systems. I like to change my tank water by hand every 3 days and I change my fish cups every 4 days. When growing out your new baby fry, frequent water changes helps grow them stronger and faster. It is alot of work..but the end result is wonderful!
5.Usted tiene una granja, peces, o habitación? Si es así ¿tiene empleados? y si es así qué tan grande es el área nos puede mostrar imágenes?
Yo no tengo una granja (eso quisiera) Pero tengo una cuarto de peces "fish room". Es mi habitación de arriba, ya que es la más cálida habitación en mi casa. Tengo 9 a 10 tanques de galón, 4-2 galones y 2-5 tanques de cría galón. Tengo 2 a 30 galones crecen las cisternas para los bettas jóvenes cuando empiezan a nadar libremente. Soy un criador diferente, ya que no utilizo calentadores en mi tanques o sistemas de filtración. Me gusta cambiar mi tanque de agua con la mano cada 3 días y cambio la agua cada 4 días. Cuando crecen los cambios frecuentes de agua ayudan a crecer más fuertes y más rápido. Es mucho trabajo .. pero el resultado final es maravilloso!
6. How long have you been a part of the IBC?
I joined the International Betta Congress (IBC) back in the early 90's though I did not start showing bettas until the late 90's. 2009/2010 show year was my most successful! I won my first Best Of Show Male and I had many Best Of Varietywinners. I believe in showing only fish I bred and raised...the pride you feel when one of your fish wins such an honorable award is fantastic! I hope all of your readers will one day feel that!
6. ¿Cuánto tiempo ha sido parte de la IBC?
Me uní al IBC a principios de los 90, aunque comenze a mostrar bettas hasta finales de los 90.2009/2010 mostrar el resultado de años fue mi mayor éxito! He ganado mi primer Macho en categoria Best of Show y tenía muchas de las mejores Varietywinners. Creo en mostrar sólo los peces que yo e criado ... el orgullo que se siente cuando uno de sus pescados gana es un premio tan honorable, es fantástico! Espero que todos sus lectores un día puedan sentir eso!

8. What is your favorite pass-time? (hobby etc)
Of course, raising Bettas and talking with other fish people is my number one favorite! Some other interests I have are drawing and crafts and I love advertising and marketing! You can always find me creating a new slogan for something or designing a new ad for something. I am an avid movie lover-I watch movies always in my spare time!
8. ¿Cuál es su favorito pasatiempo? (Manía etc)
Por supuesto, criar Bettas y hablar con gente de otros peces es mi pasatiempo favorito! Algunos intereses que tengo son de dibujo y manualidades y me encanta la publicidad y el marketing! Usted puede encontrar siempre la creación de un nuevo lema para algo o el diseño de un anuncio de algo. Soy un ávido amante de la película, veo películas siempre en mi tiempo libre!
9. What are some positive and negatives in raising/breeding fish? (you have found)
There are many positives in fish raising and breeding fish. The wonder of seeing these new babies start to grow and develop their own personality traits and begin to color up is always a great surprise! Meeting other people who share your love of fish is also a huge positive. I have so many wonderful friends in the IBC. But there are negatives as well. First, is the biggest, and that is disappointment. When you do all your preparations for the pair and put them together and everything is going right and then the male eats all the eggs or worse, eats all the newly hatched babies..that is very disappointing and I have known many people who lose their excitement over this and won't try again. But remember, anything worth doing well, you must try and try again. You will succeed eventually. Take that set back and learn from it. Also, there is a cost side to breeding fish. It is not cheap to do this hobby. The costs of tanks, and foods and buying new stock and then the costs of shipping them off to shows and such. It can make someone very unhappy financially. My average costs for shipping a box of my fish off to a show is about $100.00! Sometimes another negative is people who are negative toward you or treat you with disrespect. Remember, everyone has their own opinion. Do not take what others may say about your fish or your method of breeding or even what you breed, to heart. Do what you love and love what you do...the rest will fall into place! Oh, and a little luck as well!
9. ¿Cuáles son algunos cosas positivas y negativas en la crianza / cría de peces?
Hay muchos aspectos positivos en la piscicultura y la cría de peces. La maravilla de ver a estos recién nacidos como comienzan a crecer y desarrollar sus rasgos de personalidad propia y comenzar a cojer color, siempre es una gran sorpresa! Conocer a otras personas que comparten su amor por el pez es también muy positivo.Tengo amigos maravillosos tantos en el IBC. Pero hay aspectos negativos también. En primer lugar, es el más grande, y es decepcionante, el hacer todos los preparativos para el par y ponerlos juntos y todo va bien y luego el macho se come todos los huevos o para mal, se come todos los bebés recién nacidos .. eso es muy decepcionante y he conocido muchas personas que pierden su entusiasmo sobre esto y no vuelven a intentarlo. Pero recuerde, cualquier cosa vale la pena para hacerlo bien, hay que intentarlo una y otra vez. Usted tendrá éxito finalmente.Hay que que considerar no retroceder y aprender de eso. Además, hay un lado de los costos para la cría de peces. No es barato hacer este hobby. Los costos de los tanques, y los alimentos y la compra de nuevas acciones y los gastos de envío . Se puede hacer a alguien muy infeliz financieramente. Mi gastos mas o menos para el envío de una caja de mis peces fuera a un show es de aproximadamente $ 100.00! A veces otro negativo es que la gente, es negativa hacia ti o no te tratan con respeto. Recuerde, cada uno tiene su propia opinión. No tome lo que otros puedan decir acerca de los peces o su método de reproducción o incluso la raza, en serio. Haz lo que amas y ama lo que haces ... el resto caerá en su lugar! Ah, y un poco de suerte también!
10. May you tell us some of your trophies awards etc recieved in fish breeding etc?
I have many trophies and awards. My favorite is my Best Of Show Trophy which I for my wonderful Butterfly male in May of 2010 at the AstralBetta Society Show in Hartford, Connecticut. It means so much to me because when the show judge was making his final decision between 2 males as to who would win that show-BOTH males were mine and from the same spawn! You can see my big winner named "Buster" and his Doubletail brother, "DT" on my website under the link to "The Pinks". I have also won many ribbons for winning Best Of Variety at many shows. Best Of variety winners are where the judge choses his Best Of Show, so to win a Best Of Variety is almost as good as winning the Best Of Show..they are the best fish for that class! I have also won a few Peoples Choice awards which is an award given to a breeder by the host show club for the overall favorite fish in the show. I am an avid lecturer and I travel to many fish societies and do presentations on Bettas and I have a had a few articles written about me on Bettas. So overall, I have 2 Best Of Show wins in my time as a Betta breeder. The first was a female back in 2001 at a District Show. I finished last season number 5 overall and currently I am 7th in the top 20!
10. Que nos dicen algunos de sus trofeos de los premios recibidos, etc en los peces de cría, etc?
Tengo muchos trofeos y premios. Mi favorito y el mejor es el trofeo de la exposición que yo por mi maravillosa mariposa masculino en mayo de 2010 gane en el Salón de la Sociedad AstralBetta en Hartford, Connecticut. Significa mucho para mí porque cuando el juez del show fue tomar la decisión final entre dos machos en cuanto a quién iba a ganar, (que los dos eran míos y de la misma puesta)! Puedes ver a mi gran ganador llamado "Buster" y su hermano Doubletail, "DT" en mi sitio web en el enlace a "El Rosas". También he ganado muchas cintas por Mejor Variedad en muchos espectáculos. El mejor de los ganadores de la variedad son los que el juez elige la mejor de la exposición, por lo que ganar un Mejor De La variedad es casi tan bueno como ganar el Best of Show .. son el mejor pez para esa clase! También he ganado unos cuantos premios de Elección Popular que es un premio otorgado a un criador por el club anfitrión de la demostración de los peces en general y los favoritos en el espectáculo. Soy un profesor ávido y viajo a las sociedades de muchos peces y presentaciones sobre Bettas y han escrito algunos artículos sobre mí. Así que en general, tengo 2 Best of Show como criador Betta. La primera fue un ejemplar de las hembras en 2001 en un show de Distrito. Terminé la temporada pasada el número 5 en general y en la actualidad estoy séptimo en el top 20!
11. Any news/updtae/or upcoming event you might want people to know about?
As I mentioned before, I will be lecturing in Pennsylvania for 2 Aquarium Societies in May and then in June, in San Francisco, California, I will be attending the International Betta Congress Convention. The Convention is the end of the show season gathering where awards are given and all IBC members can come together and share their love of these magnificent fish. I am currently running for Secretary of the IBC and that will be announced at Convention as well. Wish me luck!

Como ya he dicho antes, voy a dar una conferencia en New York para 2 Sociedades de Acuario en mayo y luego en junio, en San Francisco, California, y estare presente en la Convencion del Congreso Internacional Betta. La Convención es el final de la temporada de recolección de peces de exhibicion, donde se entregan premios y todos los miembros del IBC pueden reunirse y compartir su amor por estos magníficos peces. 12. Any products you might want to promote or recommend?
I use only a few brands of products...they are the only items I use in my fish room. Hikari Brand Products for pellet and dry or frozen foods as well as New Life Spectrum foods which can be purchased at most local pet stores. I only use API brand Stress Coat Water Conditioner and Aquarium Salt for all my water changes and tanks. It is a fantastic product to help keep fish free of toxic chemicals and it helps to soothe and de-stress them easily. For Brine Shrimp Eggs which I buy alot of becuase that is what I feed my newly hatched babies-I use San Francisco Bay Brand. I try to not use many harsh chemicals as alot of fish hobbyists do, I tend to keep a very clean and well organized fish room and none of my fish live in community tanks so I keep the chances for disease at a very low rate.
12. Todos los productos es posible que desee promover o recomendar?
Puedo utilizar sólo unas pocas marcas de productos ... que son los únicos elementos que utilizo en mi cuarto de peces. Hikari Marca Productos para pellet y alimentos secos o congelados, así como alimentos de Nueva Vida del espectro que se puede comprar en cualquier tienda local de mascotas. Yo sólo uso de la API de marca estrés Escudo Acondicionador de Agua y Sal para Acuario de todos mis cambios de agua y tanques. Es un producto excepcional para ayudar a mantener el pez libre de productos químicos tóxicos y que ayuda a calmar y el estrés de-ellos fácilmente. Para Artemia huevos que puedo comprar un montón de eso porque es lo que alimentar a mis bebés recién nacidos. Yo uso Bahía de San Francisco. Trato de no usar muchos productos químicos fuertes como una gran cantidad de aficionados esto tienden a mantener una muy limpia y bien organizado el cuarto de peces y ninguno de mis peces vivos en tanques de la comunidad por lo que asi mantengo las posibilidades de enfermedades a una tasa muy baja, y eso es muy importante.
13. Is there anything you'd like to add?
Mainly I would like to say that if you love fish and want to try a challenging hobby, one filled with many joys and a few sorrows...this is the one! Bettas are the most wonderful fish in the Aquarium world (In My Opinion-of course!) people tell of wonderful stories about their pets. Some people even refer to them as their pet dog due in part because Bettas will learn your routine in your fishroom and will follow you around. I have had bettas eat from my fingers when I feed them raw meat-Yes, I did say "Raw Meat". Bettas are Carnivorous fish..they eat live foods and raw meat-I use tiny pieces of liver. My oldest living Betta I have had in my career has been 5 years old. Most Bettas have a 2 year life span...with proper care and love, these fish can stay around a long time for your enjoyment!
13. ¿Hay algo que quisiera agregar?
Sobre todo me gustaría decir que si te gusta el betta y quieres probar un hobby un desafío, una vida llena de muchas alegrías y pocas tristezas,es este mismo! Bettas son los peces más maravilloso del mundo del acuario (en mi opinión-por supuesto!) La gente cuenta historias maravillosas acerca de sus mascotas.Algunas personas incluso se refieren a ellos como a su perro mascota debe, en parte porque Bettas aprenderá la rutina en su bodega y te seguirá. Yo he tenido bettas que comen de mis dedos cuando se alimentan de carne cruda. Sí, dije "carne cruda". Los Bettas son peces carnívoros que comen alimentos vivos y la carne cruda. Puedo usar pequeños trozos de hígado. Mi antigua Betta murio a los 5 años de edad. La mayoría de Bettas tienen una duración de 2 años de vida ... con el cuidado y amor, estos peces pueden permanecer aquí por mucho tiempo a tu alcance!
14. Any advice you might have for breeders?
If you plan on trying your hand at this hobby, I would first suggest you join the IBC. They are the governing body of the Betta world and there you will find so many people from all over the world who can help you and guide you through your hobby. To join the IBC-somply go to: www.ibcbettas.org and sign up! You'll find me there! With enough interest in Bettas, you might form the first Puerto Rico Chapter of The IBC! Some more advice to a new breeder is to remember, the first time may not be successful...take what you learn and try again...it took me 5 times to have my first spawn...and even now, as an experienced breeder...I have times with no success. Have fun and love your bettas!

Algunos consejos más para un criador nuevo es que si no tienes exito lo sigas intentando ... tomar lo que se aprende y vuelve a intentarlo ... me tomó 5 veces para tener mi primer desove ... e incluso ahora, como un criador experimentado ... hay veces sin éxito.Hay que Divertirse y amar a nuestros bettas!
15. Where do you sell your fish and to where do you provide? (nationally, internationally etc etc)
I usually sell my fish at the fish shows. I sometimes sell them onAquaBid.com (be careful of AquaBid it can be quite addicting-put your wallet away!) or I donate them to charities and schools. If I have some really wonderful bettas...you can find them for sale on my website under the Stock link.
15. ¿Dónde usted vende sus peces? (Etc a nivel nacional, internacional, etc)
Yo suelo vender mis peces en las exhibiciones de peces. A veces los vendo en AquaBid.com (tenga cuidado de AquaBid puede ser muy adictivo, ponga su cartera de distancia!) O donarlos a organizaciones benéficas y escuelas. Si tengo un betta realmente maravilloso ... Usted puede encontrarlo a la venta en mi sitio web en el enlace de archivo.
